Choose with care溪 is a mountain brook, not a river. For anything larger a reader expects 河 or 江.
Japanese川 is extremely common in Japanese as kawa, especially in surnames, so it reads Japanese to most viewers.
At small sizes溪 runs about thirteen strokes; 川 is three. At small sizes 溪 needs noticeably more room than 川 does.
