得

ㄉㄜˊ dé

Two versions of the same picture, and both are free with no account and no watermark. The first has no background at all, which is the one to send your artist — but a phone or computer photo viewer set to dark will show black strokes on dark grey and it can look like nothing downloaded. If that happens, use the second one: identical characters on a plain white background. Either way you get the characters on their own — the square and the faint guide lines you see above are not in the file. Each character is 1000px, so a two-character download is 2000×1000, and the script and layout are the ones you picked.

Layout

What you come away with. Chinese has a good character for obtaining, but it is also the busiest grammar word in the language.

Before you commit

Choose with care得 is a grammatical workhorse. Read de, it links verbs to their complements in ordinary sentences, so a standing 得 can look like a fragment cut from one.

At small sizesEleven strokes, stepping radical on the left and stacked bars on the right. That stack needs a little room.

Cultural note捨得 in ordinary speech means willing to part with something, and its negative 捨不得 is the commoner half of the pair. The give-to-get reading comes from the saying 有捨才有得, no gain without letting go, which is quoted constantly on both sides of the strait.

Meaning

To get, obtain, gain; to acquire.

The plain verb for coming into possession of something.

What to do next

Pick the script and layout you want above, download the PNG, and send that file to your artist. Ask them to work from the file rather than redrawing the character freehand — that is where strokes go missing.
