Cultural noteFox spirits fill the Liaozhai tales, where they are usually beautiful women drawn more sympathetically than the humans around them. The seduction reading lives in 狐狸精, still a live insult for a woman who takes someone's husband. 狐仙 goes the other way: in northern folk religion the fox is a household deity people make offerings to.
